I Think Companies Should Focus on Classic Games Rather then Following Trends
Classic Game Collections
Capcom recently announced the Rockman Exe Legacy collection of 10 games, bundled with 6 Game Boy Advance Battle Network titles and the various versions originally released. I'm excited about the news because I was worried that these great spin-offs wouldn't see the platform revival that the Rockman series did a few years ago. Many battle network games are currently only available on the Game Boy Advance or the currently dying Wii U virtual console, while other games remain locked on the Nintendo DS. However, most of the series will be available to anyone who owns a PlayStation 4, Switch, or PC running Steam. It's great to see these classic games on the latest platforms. We hope that other companies will pay attention to the conservation strategies that Capcom has pursued over the past few years.
This month we have a great collection of fighting games called Capcom Fighting Collection. This is a compilation of US and Japanese arcade ports across the Darkstalkers franchise and other long-term hiatus series such as Red Earth, Cyberbots, and Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix. Beyond these bundles, the Capcom Arcade Stadium series (a new series coming this month) fills the non-combat gap and rejuvenates the chain of other Capcom arcade games. Previously, Rockman received multiple collections to make the original series and Rockman X available. I'm really happy to have these collections on Switch. One of my favorite parts of the recent Capcom collection is the stock images and documentation that comes with the package. Early sketches, concept art, and other important formative design documents are revealed. It's great to get a glimpse of the developer's thinking process while putting these classics together in one day. We hope that this practice will continue to spread in the current game releases.
Atari isn't the name you often hear in 2022 video game discourse, but even he is trying to keep his legacy alive and playable. The brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a huge collection of notable Atari titles throughout the company's history. Digital Eclipse continues the development of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. It includes over 90 games on 6 Atari consoles and some new games inspired by some classics. It also includes a timeline of Atari's history, including interviews with key corporate members over 50 years.
All of the above I know that the accessibility of the game looks pretty good, but there's still work to be done. There are a lot of licensed SNES games that I'm dying to try. I have rented this over and over again and would like to experience it again. All generations of games that transitioned from the late 90s to the early 2000s feel that the console generation has been lost and the revival is ripe. Even sports titles are like being in the wind, especially when new games are released each year. I immediately picked up Tiger Woods' PGA Tour collection and played PS1 and PS2 entries to see how the series changed and evolved over time. Consoles like the Sega Saturn and GameCube also feel like they're trapped in time, but emulation of these devices is possible with today's technology. In recent years, some carefully selected games have emerged, such as Night Twin to Dreams and Super Mario Sunshine, but there's much more you can do to maintain these platforms.
Nintendo and Sony have endeavored to make it possible to purchase or play games on previous platforms. Some classics have been leaked to the new PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online services, both far below what can and can be played on current hardware. Microsoft, on the other hand, has made many games natively available on the console, up to games released on the OG Xbox, but with many graphic improvements. The gaming industry and ecosystem will be much better if all the big companies have started a consistent and collaborative effort to make previous generation games available, like Xbox and Capcom.
